Imagine a person who is shown nothing yet believes to have seen everything - what will he see?
Gabriele Leidloff´s installations reflect the beginning of a development that will make it possible in the near future to see real images through physiological stimulation of the brain only. Within the framework of these technologies Leidloff makes use of advanced methods of visual reproduction and scientific apparatuses for producing new types of images. This is a dialogue with international research that is integrated and used as an artistic means to put into question common strategies of science and research. Her work refuses to follow the intentions behind the instruments and apparatuses. This has a dimension of irony.
She transforms the code of pre-fabricated media images in subjective sequences and opens them for debate. Leidloff confronts reproductions, imitations and visual fragments in unexpected relationships. Her performances make various objetcs, often unrelated to film, speak film language. She manipulates image producing techniques like X-raying, ultrasonic, computer tomography or eyetracking and operates them like a film camera. Thus she produces a productive paradox. Through the inversion of representations she constructs erroneously familiar images of the gaze from outside and of open surfaces rather than views of an inner shere.
Her installations with film, photography, video and imaging techniques arrange experimets exposing the tension between the reality and the virtuality of electronic media. Her estranging techniques dismantle as a dangerous illusion the incessently repeated illusion, that TV images are true reproductions of real events. Leidloff makes transparent and analyses images of mass culture as well as frozen and reduced visual objects, among others, face masks of dead and living beings and mannequins. These images create a cool taste of the other side of science and technology in the era of cyberspace.
While neuro scientists explore ways in which the human consciousness works by way of analysing perception, the installations of her l o g - i n / l o c k e d o u t are designed to engage neuroscientists, images theoreticians, artists and entrepreneurs in a challenging dialogue…
